Are Your Wipers Doing the Job?

Learn about the differences between rags, laundered towels and wipers

Facility cleaning and disinfecting is only as effective as the materials used to tackle the job. Choosing the right materials can be crucial to reducing the risk of contamination and ensuring high touch points are cleaned effectively. Continue reading to learn more about the differences between rags, laundered towels and wipers to make the right choice to keep your facility safe.

Understanding Your Wiper Options

There are three main wiper options that can be used in your facility – rags, laundered towels and wipers.

  • Rags are often made from worn-down cloth materials such as t-shirts, socks, or towels and are not consistent when it comes to quality, size, shape or material. The main disadvantage of rags is that they likely aren’t made from effective cleaning materials and have no indication on whether or not they were laundered before being packaged.
  • Laundered towels are one of the most common and inexpensive options when it comes to cleaning wipes, but they can pose a health risk. In one study, researchers found 100% of the laundered towels they tested contained lead and other contaminants from other facilities, even after laundering. Also, cotton cloths can reduce the efficiency of disinfectant chemicals by up to 85% and can hinder your cleaning and disinfecting protocol.
  • Disposable wipers are consistent in terms of size, shape and material and sanitation. They’re stronger and more absorbent than paper towels, making them ideal for cleaning hard-to-remove dirt where cross-contamination is a big concern. Wipers are manufactured with their cleaning task in mind making them the most hygienic choice for cleaning and disinfecting.
