Bunzl Canada Builds Sustainability Culture with “For Better” Initiative

Burlington, ON – May 8th,2024 – Bunzl Canada today announced the results of the inaugural Bunzl for Better branded sustainability campaign, held throughout the month of April.

The industry-leading distributor of essential operating supplies introduced Bunzl for Better to formalize and expand its efforts to support and strengthen communities and the environment in Canada. It will encompass a range of activities and initiatives designed to positively contribute to environmental and community sustainability, including the company’s annual “Week of Giving”.

“Supporting our communities and reducing the impact we have on our planet is a key focus for our organization,” said Bunzl Canada President, John Howlett. “Bunzl for Better is a wonderful way to pull all of our initiatives together and engage our employees, our customers and our vendors in working together towards a better tomorrow.”

Bunzl for Better was launched in conjunction with Earth Month on April 1st and included three inaugural initiatives. The first was a month-long, employee-driven effort encouraging employees to live more sustainably through acts that reduce emissions, limit waste, and improve the quality of our environment. Employees submitted their sustainable acts, which ranged from planting gardens to organizing recycling drives, and were rewarded with Bunzl for Better t-shirts and personalized donations through OneTreePlanted.

The second initiative was an e-commerce promotion where Bunzl Canada donated to OneTreePlanted for each qualifying order.

The third was a clothing drive organized by the Canadian headquarters in Burlington, ON to divert textile waste from landfills while supporting local families in need.

Through these initiatives, Bunzl Canada planted over 2200 trees in Canadian forests to aid in vital reforestation efforts. The clothing drive diverted over 500 lbs. of textile waste from landfills and donated them to the Compassion Society of Halton – a local charity that connects people with clothing, food and community resources when they need them the most.

Bunzl for Better continues to build the culture of sustainability and community empowerment that’s so important to Bunzl and its valued customers. Jenny Lawson, Director of Human Resources said, “I see so many benefits to this initiative. Along with its value of sustainability, community empowerment and supporting our diversity and inclusion efforts, employees have an opportunity to work together towards a unified goal. This kind of engagement is key to our attraction and retention of top talent.”

Queen’s U Students Give Residence Cleaning an A+

Innovative WandaNEXTTM digital platform transforms residence cleaning and hygiene.

Burlington, ON May 14, 2024 – Bunzl Canada today announced expansion of the WandaNEXTTM digital cleaning management software across Queen’s University residences in Kingston, Ontario.

Queen’s University has provided a world-class learning and on-campus experience for over 180 years, and ensuring the highest standards of facility cleaning and hygiene is critical to achieving that. As the first university in Canada to achieve the CIMS-GB with Honours advanced By GBAC certification in both its facilities and residences, Queen’s continues to seek opportunities to raise the bar on cleaning and hygiene.

Verifying and validating completed cleaning tasks posed a challenge for Queen’s, as cleaning teams relied on outdated paper processes to guide and record cleaning activities. This made it difficult to quickly identify and address areas for improvement, staff training requirements, and any student concerns.

To overcome these challenges, Queen’s University worked with Bunzl Cleaning & Hygiene to implement the WandaNEXTTM Digital Cleaning Management software. WandaNEXTTM provides cleaning scheduling, task management and service alerts in an easy-to-use mobile app, empowering Queen’s cleaning professionals to log completed tasks and quickly respond to cleaning requests submitted by students through posted QR codes. The platform was implemented in five residences as the first phase of the implementation.

“Since adopting WandaNEXTTM, our ability to respond to cleaning requests has improved dramatically,” said Matt Savoie, Director of Facilities & Infrastructure, Housing & Ancillary Services at Queen’s University. “That provides a tangible sense of security and satisfaction for our students.”

The adoption of WandaNEXTTM in residential spaces didn’t only benefit the students. The real-time documentation of when spaces were being cleaned also gave Queen’s cleaning teams confidence that their cleaning efforts were recognized and verifiable.

“Proof of presence has empowered our team to feel comfortable and confident in the cleaning program we’re carrying out,” said Kyley Devine, Caretaker in Residence Facilities at Queen’s University. “If we receive complaints or inquiries, we have the data to verify when spaces were cleaned, and what tasks were completed.”

Following the success of WandaNEXTTM in five of their residences, Queen’s University plans to expand the program to 13 additional facilities.

“We’re very proud to work with Queen’s to continue the rollout of WandaNEXTTM,” said Brock Tully, Sr. Vice President, Bunzl Cleaning & Hygiene. “This advanced digital platform has been specifically designed for organizations seeking to increase efficiency, achieve greater sustainability, and set new standards in facility cleaning and hygiene.”

Bunzl Canada’s Annual Week of Giving Supports Local Communities

BURLINGTON, ON – December 19, 2023 – Bunzl Canada is pleased to announce its third annual Week of Giving, in partnership with Food Banks Canada, to provide much needed personal care, hygiene and safety products to foodbanks across Canada during one of the most critical times of the year.

Last week, Bunzl Canada’s Cleaning & Hygiene and R3 Redistribution businesses delivered 16 pallets stocked with non-food essentials, including toilet and tissue products, hand soap and sanitizer and other cleaning products to Food Banks Canada for distribution to food banks across the country. Many of the products donated are critical to keeping families healthy during winter – the height of cold and flu season. However, for many Canadians in need, the expense of these necessary products often presents the unfortunate choice between health and personal hygiene or putting food on the table.

“2023 has been a challenging year for many Canadians, as economic pressures and inflation have exacerbated issues such as food insecurity and homelessness,” said John Howlett, President of Bunzl Canada. “At the heart of our business philosophy, culture, and values is the dedication to give back to our communities by supporting these organizations in their exceptional efforts. These values are a common thread among our employees and our customers.”

Bunzl Canada is an enthusiastic participant in a wide range of other community events across the country. This year, Bunzl continued its partnership with Food Banks Canada through financial and food donations and rallied corporate partners to donate more than 27,000 rolls of toilet tissue and other paper products as part of its National Toilet Paper Day initiative.

In May, Bunzl Canada delivered necessary cleaning and hygiene products to 1,500 evacuees impacted by wildfires in Alberta and Northwest Territories. Bunzl Canada also partnered with Alberta Avenue Community Care to build a community scale, solar-powered greenhouse, providing an Edmonton community with fresh, year-round produce. In July, the company held its 23rd Annual b.r.a.i.n.child golf tournament to fund pediatric brain tumour research at Hospital for Sick Children, which has raised over $1.75 million to date.

“We’re thrilled to have completed our third annual Week of Giving. Bunzl Canada is made up of local businesses with longstanding connections to the communities we serve,” said Margo Hunnisett, Vice President of Marketing and Communications. “This event highlights our commitment to investing in and participating actively in our communities across the country.”

Bunzl Cleaning & Hygiene A Certified Great Place to Work

BURLINGTON, ON – November 22, 2023 – Bunzl Canada is excited to announce that Bunzl Cleaning & Hygiene has been awarded the Great Place to Work certification, recognizing employers who exceed standards of employee satisfaction compared to typical Canadian workplaces. Through making talent development, diversity and culture a top priority, Bunzl Cleaning & Hygiene has successfully cultivated a vibrant workplace buzzing with opportunities for learning, supportive camaraderie, and a team-based approach to growth and success.

Great Place to Work CertificationTM showcases employers who create an outstanding employee experience and a positive, inclusive workplace culture. Certification has two steps, starting with the Trust Index™ Employee Survey that provides an in-depth analysis of the company’s culture strengths and weaknesses through candid employee feedback about the business’ work culture.

“We work hard to create a work environment where everyone feels valued and shares our commitment to delivering service excellence for our customers,” said Brock Tully, Vice President, Bunzl Cleaning & Hygiene. “We’ve taken a lot of time to focus on improving what we do and how we do it to create a welcoming and supportive workplace culture, and we are thrilled that our employees’ feedback confirms we’ve been successful in doing that.”

Bunzl Cleaning & Hygiene has a proven track record of supporting its employees and striving for excellence under Tully’s leadership. The company’s approach to putting its people first reflects the values of the Bunzl organization globally, particularly the belief that motivated people result in happy customers.

Great Place to Work Certification™ is an accreditation that demonstrates a company is an employer of choice while helping them become an even better workplace through the second step in the process: reporting, analysis and identification of continuous improvement opportunities. The program is aligned with Bunzl’s global investments in talent development, employee health and wellness, diversity, equity and inclusion, and sustainability programs in North America and around the world.

Bunzl Canada continues to improve its ability to create value for customers through a skilled and highly engaged workforce. A wide range of initiatives have been implemented to advance the company’s position as an employer of choice, including the launch of the company’s global employer brand through the recent release of the We Believe Canadian video. Other initiatives include a new employee communication program, the development of a bilingual employee intranet, the introduction of several new employee training programs, employee development events and more.

“The dedication, commitment, and the exceptional work our people do each and every day for our customers is what makes Bunzl successful,” said Bunzl Canada’s President, John Howlett. “So, there’s nothing more important to me then ensuring we continue the great work we’ve been doing, building a positive, inclusive workplace culture, embracing diversity, recognizing and supporting individual potential, and celebrating and rewarding success.”

From disinfectants to washroom cleaners, each product is designed to minimize waste and resource consumption. REGARD™ Eco-Friendlier Cleaning Solutions’ packaging is made with 100% post-consumer recycled content, which exceeds the ECOLOGO® standard. The exclusion of virgin plastics is critical in reducing the amount of crude oil, gas and emissions required to for new plastic production. This initiative further supports the circular economy and the secondary market for recycled plastic.

REGARD™ Eco-Friendlier Cleaning Solutions are packaged to ensure every shipping pallet contains more units than pallets carrying products with traditional packaging to achieve a lower overall ecological footprint. Although many traditional cleaning chemicals come in circular bottles that provide stability and good pouring flow, they also leave a lot of unused space inside boxes when packaged and are not efficient in shipping. REGARD™ Eco-Friendlier Cleaning Solutions bottles have been purposefully designed in a unique ellipses shape that results in more product per box and less warehousing and transportation resource waste.

The concentrated formulas in the new REGARD line also help reduce environmental impact by providing more end-use cleaning solution delivered in fewer shipments. A single 3.78L bottle of highly concentrated REGARD™ Eco-Friendlier Glass and Multi-Surface Cleaner can produce more than 245 litres of diluted solution, equivalent to 64 containers of 3.8 litre pre-mixed glass cleaner—a significant environmental and cost savings.

Swinging for Hope – Bunzl Raises Record Funds for Revolutionary Pediatric Brain Tumour Treatment

Burlington, ON – July 13, 2023 –Bunzl Canada is proud to have hosted its 23rd annual Ripple of Hope golf tournament in support of the Arthur & Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.

On July 11th, Bunzl Canada, its vendor partners, and customers of its cleaning and hygiene, safety, industrial, grocery/retail/processor business segments gathered at Greystone Golf Club in Milton, Ontario. Participants enjoyed a day of golf, fundraised and increased awareness for Toronto SickKids’ advanced pediatric brain tumour research initiatives.

Over the last two decades, Bunzl Canada and its supporters have raised over $1.75 million to fund the revolutionary work at SickKids Hospital to combat life-threatening pediatric neurosurgical conditions. This year’s 23rd annual tournament surpassed $60,000 in donations alone.

Distinguished as the world’s largest research centre for brain tumour research, the team at Toronto’s SickKids Hospital, led by Dr. James Rutka, has led to the discovery and development of MRI-guided focused ultrasound technology to treat children with brain tumours. This revolutionary breakthrough offers a less intrusive way to deliver targeted chemotherapy to aggressive and terminal Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) pediatric brain tumour.

Since the last annual fundraising event, Dr. Rutka and his team, in partnership with the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, received approval to begin a world first clinical trial with the newly developed MRI-guided technology.

“I’m very pleased today to announce that we’ve enrolled the first patient on this clinical trial. This is the first patient in the world who has been treated for this disease with this [MRI-guided] technology,” said Dr. Rutka.

“I’ve been at this for over 30 years, and this is the first time in my career I’ve been able to take a research breakthrough from the bench to the bedside, treating the very first patient in the world with this novel strategy,” said Dr. Rutka.

MRI-guided focused ultrasound technology allows doctors to bypass the blood-brain barrier and directly target aggressive tumours within the brain stem. Dr. Rutka and the research team at Toronto’s SickKids Hospital plan to continue clinical trials of this transformative treatment, and hope to open the trial worldwide.

“Bunzl has been amazing in its support of our research efforts over more than 20 years now which is pivotal for us to do these types of clinical trials,” said Dr. Rutka. “Without that support, we wouldn’t be talking about going from concept to clinical trial as we can today.”

“Words can’t express our appreciation for the support and contributions from our vendor partners and customers,” said John Howlett, Bunzl Canada’s President. “We’re excited to continue to support Dr. Rutka and his amazing team at SickKids Hospital as they continue to develop revolutionary treatments for children battling this devastating disease.”
